Early Childhood Development Advances The Culture of Peace

On 29 November 2018 at Yale University, the ECPC co-hosted a conference that featured a global team of peacebuilding experts who championed the transformative power of children and families as agents of change for peace. Together, they revealed a proven theory of change and sounded global call to action.  Presented in this section is a 14-part video series that captures their knowledge, energy and inspiration.

Small asks for BIG impact: Investing in the early years for sustainable development and peaceful societies

On 17 July, the ECPC co-hosted a special event at UNICEF HQ during the 2019 United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. A distinguished panel of seven including high-level experts from science, practice, governance and civil society presented on the growing evidence base for investing early, including how early childhood programs and services contribute to multiple 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and building ‘The Culture of Peace’.

NEW YORK, NY—On 17 July 2019, the Early Childhood Peace Consortium (ECPC) co-hosted a special event at UNICEF House entitled, Small Asks for BIG Impact: Investing in the Early Years for Sustainable Development and Peaceful Societies.The opportune event coincided with the annual United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF2019) .

Friedrich W. Affolter, EdD, education expert for Risk-Informed Programming at UNICEF New York Program Division, and Secretary to the ECPC, joins host, Nancy Shemrah Fallon of the ECPC Global Communications Team. Dr. Affolter discusses his pioneering work as manager of UNICEFs Peace Building Education and Advocacy Program (PBEA), also called ‘Learning for Peace’, which designed education programs that contributed to the mitigation of drivers of conflict in 14 fragile and post-conflict countries.

Dr. Affolter talks about the many informative research products, produced by the PBEA, and how they can be best used by others to further this work. These 75 downloadable research products, made available on this website, include: data research and case studies, manuals and guidance, notes, summaries, reports and outcome evaluations, advocacy and issue briefs, gender and peacebuilding reports, a video series and toolkits for practical use and much more—all illustrating the vital links between education, social cohesion and peacebuilding.
