Scientific and economic evidence shows that this failure has life-long consequences. It can lead to stunting and other limitations in development, which are caused by a lack of nutrition, a lack of sufficient stimulation, and exposure to environments that cause stress. Stunting not only leaves children vulnerable to infection, but it can permanently limit their physical and cognitive capacity.

Investing in the early years: a roadmap for sustainable futures

This high-level event—held at the “EWEC Hub” at UNHQ in the margins of the UN General Assembly—highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral investments in a child’s earliest years to address inequality, break the cycle of poverty, and improve outcomes later in life. Through a series of discussions, speakers noted the long-lasting impact of these “human capital investments” and encouraged urgent action to capitalize on them. Several countries also showcased their own experiences, providing concrete examples of interventions from Uganda, Norway, Chile and Estonia.

According to a study by the International Child Development Steering Group of The Lancet, close to half of all children under five – an estimated 250 million children worldwide – fail to meet developmental potential in the first five years of life. Young children require nurturing care in order to thrive and develop healthily. Yet, few programs that support development and enable nurturing actually reach young children and caregivers – a particular concern for those in conflict zones, or in regions where natural or man made disasters have created humanitarian crises.
