Webinar Description

Sudan is currently experiencing the world’s largest humanitarian emergency in recent history.  On April 15th 2023, a war broke out between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), devastating the lives of more than 47 million Sudanese people. Since then, an unprecedented 11,200,000 civilians, including over 4.6 million children, have fled their homes and been displaced within and beyond Sudan - making Sudan the largest internally displaced population crisis in the world and largest child displacement crisis (UNOCHA).  Eighteen months later, escalating violence and stalled ceasefire negotiations have hampered international humanitarian efforts, blocking food, medicine, and other essential supplies. Local emergency response groups and grassroots organizations are tirelessly working to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and support Sudan’s civilians, often under dangerous conditions and with limited resources.

As the conflict in Sudan continues, children are suffering and dying.  Today:

  • Over 2 million babies have been born into a severely damaged healthcare system, with 80% of hospitals damaged or destroyed (Save the Children International).
  • The risk of all vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) outbreaks has been at its highest since the conflict broke out in mid-April 2023 as childhood immunization programmes are stalled (UNICEF Sudan).
  • 3.4 million children under the age of 5 are at high risk of epidemic diseases, including measles, malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoeal diseases and cholera (UNICEF USA).
  • Families are resorting to eating grass to survive amid a worsening hunger crisis, with famine-level malnutrition affecting half of Sudan’s 18 states (Save the Children).
  • Over 4 million children are acutely malnourished, with 730,000 critically malnourished (World Vision Sudan).
  • Over 6.7 million women and children at risk of GBV-SA while GBV response remains severely underfunded (<16% of need) (UN Women Africa)
  • More than 17 million school-aged children are out of school (UNICEF Sudan).
  • Only 57% of the required funding (2.7 Billion dollars) necessary to provide life-saving aid and protection has been received (Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan)

Call for Action

Urgent action is needed to protect the children of #theforgottencrisis. Join the Angel Kids Foundation, International Society of Social Pediatrics and Child Health (ISSOP) and the International Paediatric Association for direct reports from frontline Sudanese doctors, responders and analysts.  Drs. Affan and Goldhagen will provide insights from the perspective of pediatricians and pediatric organizations.

The discussion will explore the status of Sudanese organization and civilian-led emergency responses, the imperative to raise global awareness about the state of children in Sudan, the potential roles and opportunities for pediatricians globally, and the priorities and needs of Sudanese children in the year ahead.
