The General Assembly, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 72/243, will convene a high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly, to be known the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit that will occur the day before the start of the general debate of the seventy-third session of the General Assembly. The focus of the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit is on Global Peace in honour of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela’s legacy has become synonymous with the promotion of peace, reconciliation, unity, non-discrimination, protection and promotion of human rights.

The Peace Summit offers the opportunity for world leaders to renew their commitment to global peace, conflict prevention, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, promotion and protection of human rights and long-term development initiatives as called for by the Secretary General. The Peace Summit will also adopt a political declaration which will reaffirm the values of Nelson Mandela (See concept Note Nelson Mandela Peace Summit).

The Summit proceedings will be remotely be made available to the public on UN Web TV on Monday, September 24, 2018, from 9:30 AM. to 6:00 PM EST.
