Covid-19 is the latest exacerbator of human rights violations and poverty; its impact is disproportionately hard on the most at-risk segments of the society, in particular migrant women and children. For children, poverty is multidimensional; it is not about just money, but a lack of housing, education, nutrition, clean water, health services and responsive caregiving. Despite being vulnerable, children are tremendously adaptable and resilient. Appropriate support mitigates the destabilizing effects of multidimensional poverty. Early Childhood Education and Care is the most cost-effective investment a country can make to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Cities are ground zero for global challenges and mayors are on the front lines of finding solutions. Mayors can catalyze efforts to lift people out of poverty, starting with the youngest children. International promising practices show us that many cities around the world represent a “force of change” in this direction.
