The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the growth and learning environments for children across all age-groups. This is particularly the case for children in early years. Young children are at the highest risk of having their development pathways compromised as a result of not just the COVID-19 pandemic itself but the vital mitigation measures of school closings that all governments have undertaken to ensure social distancing.
According to a recent UNICEF report, an estimated 40 million children worldwide have missed out on early childhood education during the COVID-19 crisis. For millions of children globally, ‘schools’ are more than spaces of learning, they are also spaces for support, predictable routines, care and resilience. This can have adverse effects for children’s well-being, development, and protection. In Pakistan, the COVID-19 has particularly affected the learning, nurturing, and care opportunities for children from low-income, marginalized backgrounds with more than 40 million school-going learners affected across all grade levels. Under such circumstances, this webinar brings together experts and practitioners in early years to explore and discuss the potential response options available for governments, workforce, and parents in Pakistan and rest of the Global South to ensure that children in early years do not face the negative consequences of COVID-19.
