Collaborative and Inclusive Economic Development

From Josh Wang, MBA Candidate, Class of 2019

The creation of equitable societies with a high quality of life at a global level is within our reach – and collaborative, inclusive economic development strategies are essential to achieving this goal. The 2019 Economic Development Symposium will explore the most exciting ideas and practices in the field today.

The Symposium is the EDC’s flagship annual event, designed to bring together senior thought leaders, practitioners, and investors from think tanks, academia, government, international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector who want to foster social impact through economic development. It is a platform for eminent scholars, action agents and opinion leaders to debate and provide actionable recommendations on pressing economic development issues in emerging markets and the U.S. This year’s Symposium will highlight big ideas in economic development, including Opportunity Zones, The AmazonHQ Contest, The Future of Work in the Digital Age, Community Wealth Building, Infrastructure Public-Private Partnerships, Early Childhood Development, Scaling Science, and Climate Resilient Development.

How we we best support the next generation through policy, funding, and programming?

The Early Childhood Development Panel will examine how early childhood programs, global and domestic, drive health, social and economic outcomes. We will discuss the imperative for traditionally siloed programs to collaborate with a range of partners and take a whole-child perspective. Additional topics explored include the impact that maternal health and child nutrition have on child development, research at Yale that ties childhood programming to peace, and the recent doubling in funds for US child care and development block grants.
